How did Angels for Higher begin?

As you may know, Robert and Melissa Hendershot’s oldest son, Trevor, has Down syndrome. He was bullied, called the ‘r’ word and told he was worthless as a freshman in high school. 

However, by his senior year he had turned the whole school around to the point where the faculty drafted him onto the homecoming court, and then his classmates elected him Homecoming King in the greatest landslide in school history—he received more votes than the other four candidates combined.

After graduation, Trevor was told that the best job he could ever hope for would be folding towels in the basement of a hotel laundromat. But God had a different plan…

Trevor was hired as Team Store Greeter by MLB’s L.A. Angels in 2012, by the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks in 2013, and by both the NFL’s L.A. Rams and USC Trojans in 2018. Over the years, Trevor became known, admired, and loved by untold thousands of sports fans, college students, fellow employees, university administrators, team executives, professional athletes and people living in the surrounding communities.

He’s an attraction of the store, I would say. But he really works. We value him and we value the work that he does.”  — Ducks' Director of Merchandising

Robert attended a retreat some time ago where a visiting pastor encouraged the men, “Find out what breaks your heart, because that is where God is calling you into ministry.”  Robert then understood his calling…to build on what Trevor was doing in Southern California by expanding inclusive employment opportunities for more young adults who have Down syndrome with more teams and universities across the United States!

Angels for Higher was thus founded to empower young adults with Down syndrome to reach their full potential by facilitating their employment as Greeters at athletic venues and university campuses. They use their jobs to positively impact tens of thousands of sports fans, college students, fellow employees, university administrators, team executives, professional athletes and people living in the surrounding communities!
